Questions for Noein

Page history last edited by ytse@student.otis.edu 4 mos ago

Respond to the following prompts on this wiki page using the "edit" feature.

Make sure to include your username in your response and separate your answers from each other using the "insert horizontal line" button.

See the rubric if you have questions about how you will be graded on your response.

Before responding to the prompt below make sure you watch episodes "Dimension of Tears", "Previous Person" and "Out of Sync". Read the Lecture Notes. Don't forget to cite your information if it is coming from another source. Even if you are paraphrasing (putting information into your own words), you still need to acknowledge where you found that information originally.

Prompt:

Based on these three episodes, how would you describe Haruka's character? Would you categorize her as a "time traveler", why or why not, explain specifically? What are her strengths and weaknesses as a character in this anime? In addition, what risks do these episodes present in regards to interdimensional traveling (use specific examples in your answer)?

soap.

This is so non-heinous. It turns out my original answer was unsaved. And according to Murphy's Law, which seems to have clung to my life harder than a scarred running back getting tackled clutches that pig-skin, I no longer have my copy. So my answer isn't as, well, it isn't going to be quite the same.

To be frank, (on a side note, I want to know who this Frank guy is, and how his name became synonymous with both honesty, and hot dogs) I’m on the proverbial fence. I want to say that she’s a time traveler because of the obviousness of the similarities between the universes. But it is blatantly and repeatedly stated that she is in fact, not. It’s drilled into you harder than anything Gurren Lagann could hope to throw at you. So a more appropriate name for her would be demon. Short for dimension traveler.

She’s flimsy. For being the center of attention all the time, she’s a really weak character. She’s about as deep as a puddle. I’d much rather, and in fact did find myself focusing on Crow, and then the more side characters. In that order. Crow’s interaction with his mother was really of interest to me. His questioning his sanity even further sold me on him as a character. Though as I always say, if you have the piece of mind to actually ask yourself if you’re going insane, then it’s very likely that you are indeed not. Her strength is really as a link. She’s what holds the events and people together in the series. She’s like a personified chain. Unfortunately, this also means you could switch her out with someone else, and the same outcomes could easily come about. But above all, the thing that truly annoyed me was that no matter how many times you explain something to her, or to a slightly lesser extent, anyone in this series, you will find yourself repeating and reiterating yourself. A lot. Five episodes later, and it finally becomes cannon. It got ridiculous.

Well, other than having to hear something repeated over and over, there are both physical and mental risks involved in sliding. If something goes awry, you’ll end up permanently losing limbs. Like the guy who lost his arm, and came back with a ridiculously undersized one later. I assume if you materialize without a head, there’s pretty much no return trip in store for you as well. But possibly even scarier is the loss of your mind. The guy with the emo hair cut that tries to kill crow ends up cracking and barely survives the regenerative psyche surgery. And then of course if you decide to disconnect your lifeline, you’ll just end up fading away into nothing, much like a small time actor who stops getting gigs. Or Tom Green.

I would categorize her as a “time traveler” only in the aspect that she has traveled through time. In most instances that I am familiar, they choose to, invented a device to do so, or have a yearning to travel through time. Here, she is randomly thrust into the future, where they explain that she technically does not exist to them. I find that idea interesting as they reverse the point of view saying that she is from one of many pasts as seen from their future. Her strengths are figuring things out pretty quickly, as she escaped a holding cell incredibly rapidly and found her way to where she needed to go. As far as weaknesses go, I see one in her personality. It’s weird that she doesn’t question things in the future or realize “holy shit! I’m in the future!” after wandering around there for a while. In a way, that might help her, because if it was me, I would most likely stand dumbstruck until those dragon knights caught me, just contemplating my place in the universe(s). The risks in inter-dimensional traveling present the problem of existence. It is explained to her in “Dimension of Tears” that there a ton of futures that are untouched by the actions in just one past, and that there is little to no correlation between them. It is brought up again when Karasu is told that this Haraku is not the one he knew in his past. The risk is small according to their logic, but it seems to make their actions totally pointless. But Karasu decides to disprove their logic by saving her anyway as he believes her to be the one from his past and that they did indeed know each other. She recognizes him and he seems pleased with his actions as only someone who knew him, could recognize him, even after all the years and physical changes. Yet at the same time, as their actions have no consequence, (as the other times don’t technically exist) it can be argued that they can mess with other times in a consequence free environment, leaving them to not have to take any precautions with tampering with things. They can just go around willy nilly and mess with everything. Their actions in these alternate timeframes will not have any connection their own, so that is why they are willing to kill Haruka (presumably) as that is not the Haruka they know, freeing them any moral constraints regarding life in alternate timeframes.

Through out the three episodes of Noein I watched, Haruka’s character seems shy, curious, confused and brave. I would call her a time traveler because she traveled through time, from present to future. She became a quantum existence who appeared in many different dimensions. Because she was in what we know to be her present, instead of being transfered to her future; she got taken to another dimension's future, which makes her a time traveler.  Her strengths are her knowledge and skills to get around in whatever surroundings she is put in. Her weakness would be her inability to recognize a new dimension or recognize truth. The risks that are presented in regards to interdimensional traveling are that you are put in the same dimension with your former friends from the present, and you may interact with them. Interacting may have caused a change in the future. Her present friends are in the dimension she is taken to fifteen years later where she interacts with her friends from what would now be her past fifteen years into their future. While time didn’t change for Haruka because she traveled at the speed of light, time evolved for her town and her friends that could have caused additional trouble.

Haruku is obviously loved and missed once she has disappeared into the Timespace. Her real strength as a character comes from how important she is to those around her; she is a tool to the vilans and an adored friend to her classmates. I would describe her as brave and understandably naive based on her conversations with the AI, Amaiku. During those conversations she was inquisitive but lacked the ability to understand the scope of the position she was in. Though the lecture notes describe her as a time-drifter, she appears to be more of a time-hostage in the episode "Dimension of Tears," but ultimately I would call her a time-traveler because she has the ability to do so.

As represented in Yu/Karasu’s character, one risk of time-travel into a future only 15 years forward is being emotionally invested in it. Should a person move through the past or future by 200 years there is not as much, if any, conscious emotional connection to resolve things on a more personal level. One thing I have noticed in all of the class examples so far is the need for certain level of indifference in being able to emotionally handle the time-travel experience.

Haruka was being kidnapped and transferred to a new future dimension from the past timespace through the tunnel and I will say that she is a time traveler even that it wasn’t her will to go there, but she traveled through time.  I think she is quite smart, brave and curious about the future but yet she felt horrified when she found out the truth about future in which the world was destroyed and her friends have been changed.

I think her strength is that althought she is an ordinary elementary school kid, but she is brave enough to not accept the way she was bought to the future, and tried to find out the truth.  Her weakness might be the relationship between Yu, Karasu, and her friends.  The Noein time travel is described by the multiple universe interpretation of Quantum Theory and explained that the infinite number of possibilities exists when things are measured in on a microscopic level of quanta, and the timespace could possible branch out into infinite worlds, and that explained the time travel theory of how Haruka was traveled to the future through timespace.  But I think one of the risks is that Haruka’s travel could cause confusion through the interaction between Karasu and Ai.  Karasu wasn’t able to save the Haruka in the future and tried to protect the Haruka that traveled through timespace.  Haruka also interacted with the future Yu (Karasu), and Ai and that could cause confusion when she went back to her timespace.

Andi
I would describe Haruka’s character as; determined, brave, curios, and naive.  She is just a girl, and although she does not fully understand what she has just been thrust into, she is determined to return home and fights for this cause. She is smart and cunning, taking notice of small details, such as the nurse’s having the key to her room. Knowing she is not very strong she uses her wit to gain what she needs. I would say Haruka is a time traveler because she did travel through time. She however did not travel by her own free will or with any true purpose to her, making her a different type of time traveler. Moving from one demention to another made her a time traveler just as it made Napoleon and Plato, time travelers in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. In my opinion I wouldn’t really say SHE is a time traveler, I would say Yu is because he is the one that transported her from place to place and he is the original traveler. She can not travel without him, but he can travel without her. Her strengths are that she is determined and witty. In Episode 6 she knows she wants to get home and realizes the nurses are the only way out. She fakes an injury to get then nurse’s attention and takes the key.  That was wise because not only did she escape, but she bought herself some time by remembering to lock the door behind her with the nurse inside. Another strength she has is her innocence; she is so small and seemingly helpless causing a slight reaction of tenderness from the other characters.  They know who she is but her being a child and so naïve almost makes them regret what they are about to do. This however is also her weakness, she is too young to understand what is happening even after it is explained to her rather clearly. She has a one track mind, “I want to go home” because it is all she can understand. What she can see and touch is real regardless of what everyone else says. There are many risks these episodes present in regards to interdimensional traveling. The simple fact that the more they come through the world the larger the “rip” gets, and the more in danger the world becomes of not existing. Aside from that the travelers themselves run the risk of ceasing to exist if they stay in the “past” too long. They do not actually exist in that place, so they can not stay.  Yu for example, is beginning to fade away and weakens severely. He has no connection to his world to prove that he indeed exists.

Haruka's character could best be described as vital, 'precious', and innocent. She is the link between the dimensions although she doesn't seem to know it within all of the episodes. Haruka is Karasu's love and she is the reason Karasu wants to protect her and her dimension. He also wants to protect Karasu because I believe she is dead or non-existant within the alternate dimension run by the Shangri-La. Not only does Karasu want to protect the future of Haruka, he is trying to save himself from an alternate dimension devastated by destruction. I would say Haruka is a time traveler because she is traveling through time with the assistance of friends, but none the less traveling. She may not have the capabilities of time traveling herself in the dimension that her character exists, but the possibility of her acquiring the capabilities in another dimension is still present. I believe her strengths are found within her abilities to comprehend a situation and take action in her own future. Within each episode she must take control of the situation in order to survive. Another strength is her open-mindedness. She seems to take the idea that infinite dimensions exist pretty well as opposed to her teacher who is totally naive to the idea of alternate dimensions. I think her weakness is that she is possibly too nice and trustworthy. In Episode 6 she doesn't seem to question her friends motives after she is taken captive. It seems she is a little naive, but other than that I can't really see any other weaknesses. I think the main risk (the same risk as we have seen in Sliders) is the idea that Haruka could be trapped in an alternate dimension never to return to her dimension. Another risk involved is the seemingly slight risk that what happens in the past can effect the another possible dimension. So as we have seen throughout the episodes Haruka's dimension is being effected by the future alternate dimension because Karasu is trying to preserve Haruka's future. Keep in mind, the alternate future dimension has little effect on the outcome of there own futures even though they are interfering with one of there other possibly pasts. It seems to make the plot a little less significant and confusing. Also, the characters of the future cannot exist in the past too long or else they risk death of some sort. As Andi has recognized Yu progressively becomes weaker and weaker as the times goes on. It is a strange little touch of the show, but I kind of like the idea that there are consequences for staying in the past too long.

Anywho, the show was quite interesting either way and visually stimulating.

Haruka seems to be the unfortunate victim of much scheming and power-play in these episodes, but she is also obviously very valued and loved. As an innocent young girl, she is kidnapped from one timespace of the past, and fought over by two opposing forces in the future because she is a necessary form of power to them. But back home where she is taken from, she is searched and yearned for. She inspires the timeless love of Yuu, and when she is lost, he later becomes Karasu. She is a “time traveler,” but not a repeated or willing one. She does factually travel in time from the past to a potential future, but does not fully understand how or why. Her strength as a character comes from her propensity to ask a lot of questions, thereby acting as a means of explanation to an uncomprehending audience. As she deals with her naivete and gradual understanding of the peril that she and the potential future universe are in, we too come to understand the gravity and complexity of the situation. Her weakness is that she must constantly be protected by the unrequitted Karasu, and is essentially a hapless bystander as she is tugged back and forth between the warring Shangri-La and La’Cryma. The risks of interdimensional traveling in these episodes apply not just to the alternate worlds, but to the travelers themselves. It is dangerous that this movement between timespaces has essentially created a war between opposition factions, each bent on conquering and prevailing at all costs, regardless of the detriment to past and future alter-selves. But the worst consequence is that the dark knights (warriors of La’Cryma) must permanently trade their bodies to become mobile matter. This puts them in constant peril, as they are always at risk of evaporating into oblivion if their lifelines are disconnected from their home world’s computer. This means that Karasu, the one valiant hero of the series, will eventually sacrifice his own life to protect Haruka.

I would think of the leading actress of Noein, Haruka, as “time traveler", because she can travel into the future. Also, in the second episode, Haruka, sometimes, saw the illusion of the past she saw before. I think it means that she traveled to her past with the illusion. I suggest that I could be “ time traveler”, if I have some ability to see my future and past. "The Dragon torque” of Haruka shows her past, and she meets with Dragon knights who came from the future. In these reasons, she can directly or indirectly experience time and other dimension and change them, so I think she is a time traveler.

Her strength is from the power of “Dragon torque”. Her power has a great deal of influence on future and changes it. On the other hand, I would say her weakness is that she cannot control the power of “Dragon torque”, and also cannot travel correct time and accurate place and dimension where she intends to.

I think Noein has some errors to recognize interdimensional traveling. First one is “Grandfather paradox”. In the first episode, Kara said Yu-o “You are me”, and Yu-o knows Kara is himself in future. Even though he knows his future, Kara in future did not change. Yu-o knows his future himself, Kara, and Haruka’s destiny, and he would try to change it, but he didn’t. Other one is that other dragon knights try to leave no traces behind. After Karaand villains smash up a cable car, other dragon knights could not travel time again to fix it or bring new cable car from other dimension. If they want to leave no trace of fighting, they should change everything again and again forever. Last one is dragon knights said "This space, world, is unstable.” I think this means there are alternative worlds where they came from.

In the Noein, Haruka is one of the protagonists of this anime. She is a typical elementary school student in Hakodate. Her character looks so innocent but she is also looking like a brave girl. Still she is so dumbfounded character because she does not realize the importance of her existence.
In series titled "The Dragon Torque", Haruka becomes very complicated character, which, I personally understand that she can be a god of time, which it is hard to describe her as a time-traveler. In these episodes, she does not know how to use her supernatural power to travel time yet. Her power cannot be controled well, which her traveling through time is not by her williingness. If she uses her power as her willingness then it will make her character as a time traveler. Till then she will remain as a character like god or person who has a destito proclaim something postive or negative affect toward world.

Haruka is interesting character in these episodes because everything that around her changes through times without even recognizing. As for more, it can't be tell which world it is. If there is real person like Haruka then our world will have the chaos with confused time. What if someone goes back to past and marries some girl or guy then it will create a person who should not be existed then everything that around the world will change by that person? It will be difficult for Haruka because she is the person who traveled through and person, who goes with her, will lose his existence. Her charater seems very dangerous because she can destroy the time and changes time whenever by her willingness.
