Pertaining to our theme of Social Responsibility...

1) If the future society of the Eloi have become complacent, herbivorous livestock that are essentially at the bottom of the food chain, why does the Time Traveller choose to befriend one? Does he simply long for a harmless companion/pet? What other motivations might he have for befriending a future evolution of his own class?

2) What subversive statement might Wells be making about bourgeois British society in creating a complacent, weak, and simplistic evolution of it?

3) If the Morlocks are monstrous, predatory creatures, why does Wells portray them as the true masterminds of the futuristic society? What does this mean in regard to the peasants who dwell below his own society? Is it a warning?

4) If the Time Traveller witnesses the slow, eventual decay and destruction of life on Earth, what is the point of the second, mysterious journey from which he does not return? Where might he have been going, if he knew what horrible things would become of mankind? Did he ever intend to return at all?

5) If the Time Traveller knows of the eventual destruction of Earth, why does he choose to calmly discuss his travels in an academic forum? What do his actions show in regard to the important or futility of his, and mankind's, actions? Does the very nature of humanity determine its inevitable downfall?

1. The time traveler stepped out of his machine for the first time in year 802,700. If it was his first time traveling why would he think he could gather information from this unfamiliar world and then go back to his present life without consequence?

2. Why did the time traveler claim responsibility to fulfill and engage the new society of entity he traveled to without knowledge of where he would land?

3. Because he traveled into a time where technology had taken over society and the people no longer had the same means of survival, did the time travel stand out to that new generation of people he began to learn about?

Edit/Contribute at will.

At 3:00 I will email whatever we have here to Ms. Venturini.

Chris, unless you reply to my emails or write here, so far I am Main Editor and Arielle is Main Researcher. That makes you Main Reader. We are happy to trade/discuss if you feel you are better suited to a certain role. Cheers.
